Helping our clients grow their business by advertising, entertaining viewers by our TV shows, and informing the valley through our newscasts from KMIR Today (5 a.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays), KMIR News at 5 p.m., KMIR News at 6 p.m., KMIR News at 10 p.m. on KPSE MY Network, and KMIR News at 11 p.m.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Here's our history taken from Wikipedia:
The station started broadcasting on October 26, 1968 as the second outlet in Palm Springs after ABC affiliate KPLM-TV (now KESQ-TV), which had launched only three weeks before. Airing an analog signal on UHF channel 36, it has been an NBC affiliate from the start. Actor John Conte owned the station along with the El MIRador hotel in Palm Springs, from which the call letters were derived. Desert Regional Medical Center now occupies the site of the old hotel. Today, one can still see the El Mirador broadcasting tower standing in front of the hospital. This is where the station originally transmitted from. The current tower is a replica structure emulating the original, which was destroyed in a 1989 fire.
Journal Communications acquired KMIR from Conte in 1999. On September 26, 2007, the company announced its purchase of KPSE from Mirage Media for $4.7 million which closed on January 28, 2008.[3] Also in 2008, the station celebrated its 40th anniversary. In October 2013, Journal reached a deal to sell KMIR and KPSE to OTA Broadcasting (a company controlled by Michael Dell's MSD Capital);[4] KMIR is the company's first station affiliated with one of the Big Four television networks.[5]
Along with the other major Coachella Valley stations, KMIR identifies itself on-air using its cable designation rather than its over-the-air digital channel position. This unusual practice (also common in the Fort Myers/Naples, Florida market, where KMIR's sister station WFTX serves as the market's Fox affiliate) stems in part from Palm Springs's exceptionally high cable penetration rate of 80.5% which is one of the highest in the United States.[6]
